THE LIES WE ALL TELL ON OUR CV

The lies we all tell on our CV

In Today’s competitive job market, competition for jobs out there is very tough, and trusts me that many of us we’re all guilty of telling a few lies on our CV's. The lies we tell on our cv's may be intentional to some people but for other they lie with ought the knowledge that it’s a lie.

For most people the lie part is intended to impress the recruiter for the purpose of being seen as more impressive and skilled than we actually are as compared to other.

Well, this technique works for some candidates... But for other sometimes it ends up very bad for them... And if you have ever lie on your CV and it worked... Then you’re very lucky.

And the fun part of people who lie on their CV is when you actually have to demonstrate these things to your employer.

Here are some of the Lies lots of people includes on their CV

1. I work well under pressure

Most candidates add on their CV that they are capable of working under pressure... well; to some people it’s true but admitting on your CV that you are capable of working under pressure you should really mean that. When you say "I work well under pressure" that means you are capable of handling work stress very well... being able to make fast decision quickly, being the type of person that wont panic if your boss comes over and hand you a task which is required to be completed too quickly.

When you write that "I work well under pressure" means that when things get a bit tough at work you can handle them accordingly without panicking or taking refuge under your desk swigging from an emergency help.

2. I'm a team player, I work well with others

You find a candidate stating that "I'm a team player, I work well with others", while in reality they don’t like working in a team together with others... These people are mostly those selfish people.
Basically you hate everyone, and dread the moment when you will be placed on your first special team project.

That’s when you find them struggling to cope with other.

3. Lies about Previous work history

On this part even myself I ‘am guilty as charged... As I once lied on my CV regarding my previous work history... and the best part of it is that i got the job any way. I remember adding a false work history that I worked as a “Financial Controller” for a certain small company which wasn’t famously at the time... Infarct it was my friends company and I was 100% sure that even if they made a background check to prove my story it will check out correct as my friend knew me.. But it was a gamble... Which obviously worked just because I was able to answer all the question they asked me regarding finance and they bought my story..

Faking your previous work is more harmful as it might back fire on you if it does not look more believable.

Your story needs to be more believable... Perhaps stating that you managed a team of 10 people during your 1 month an unpaid internship role  may be slightly too obvious of a lie.
Thus it’s better to calm it down... and instead just say you managed just 2 people, this way it will be at least more believable than stating you managed a team of 10 people which in reality it’s not possible for an Intern.

4. Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel

Well, it’s not a lie to say that you have knowledge of Microsoft Excel as we all know that if you have a little knowledge of computer then you must have come across or used the Microsoft Excel program... But stating that you have excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel that is totally different from saying you have knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

Stating that you have an excellent knowledge of Excel goes beyond being able to draw a few pie charts and simple graphs or even the common formulas for calculating summation or Averages.
When you state on your CV that you have an Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel, the pray that your boss never asks you to create a dynamic range or a pivot table.

5. I have Excellent Communication Skills

Having strong communication skills is one of the common job requirements for most of the recruiters seeking for candidates. But it’s one thing to say I have excellent communication skills… and another thing to prove it when you’re in an interview room.

Just because you have somewhat decent grasp of the English language doesn’t mean that your communication skills are amazing enough to be described as Excellent.

Having 'Excellent communication skills': What does it really mean?
Having excellent/good communication skills is all about being able to convey information to people clearly and simply, in a way that means things are understood and get done. It’s about transmitting and receiving messages clearly, and being able to read your audience. It means you can do things like give and understand instructions, learn new things, make requests, ask questions and convey information with ease.

It also means that you can adapt yourself to new and different situations, read the behaviour of other people, compromise to reach agreement, and avoid and resolve conflict. In fact, a large part of good communication is about being empathic, so you can understand how others will interpret your words and behaviour. And don’t forget that communication is a two-way street, so being a good listener is vital.

If you’re Olivia Pope, then you should be confident enough to say that you have Excellent Communication Skills. If you’re a fan of TV Series "SCANDAL" then you already know what i mean. That’s why she is a gladiator... But, sure enough you're not a gladiator.

6.  You’re confident
I have learned that, most people who present themselves as confident are often not as confident as they appear to be. For people who lie in their CV by presenting themselves as they are confident.
A person with self confidence won’t sweat every time they have to introduce themselves to a new person, or being scared when given an opportunity to present important information to a group of people.

The worst part is that, if you lied in your CV about being confident.. while your not... it is very easy to get caught because you’re basically a shy mess in reality.

7.  I’m a very hardworking individual
Being a hard working individual requires more than just writing it on your CV. Hard working people always show their ability in action and not by just saying that they are...

Don’t call yourself a hard working person if you’re hard working is purely between your contracted hours, Friday afternoons don’t count.

You can’t work extra hours just because you're not being paid overtime... then don’t count yourself as a hard working person..

So, Have you ever lied on your CV?
